Java programmers are somewhat sought after.
C++ programmers are still needed and harder to find.

I'm not sure about how lucrative it is (still in college) but it is a decent introductory language nonetheless.
To start download the appropriate files from the java website (java.sun.com) and go to the downloads section and click on ';Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE)'; then download the Java SE 6 Beta JDK, then you need a compiler (you could just use notepad but I wouldn't suggest it). I prefer blueJ (http://www.bluej.org/) for this but many people don't like it, a second free compiler is Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org/). After you have the files go to the java learing page (http://java.sun.com/learning/) and start from there. I'm not sure how this could help a new programmer but this tutorial (http://www.realapplets.com/tutorial/) was of immense help to me when I was starting out. A google search can also be of great help.
